How to Tell if a Therapy Intensive is Right for You

Let’s start with the obvious: your schedule is already packed and the thought of adding another weekly commitment just might make your head explode. Therapy intensives offer a convenient alternative, but how do you even tell if a therapy intensive is right for you? Here’s everything you need to know so you can make that decision for yourself.

You Don’t Need to be in Crisis to Benefit from a Therapy Intensive

On the surface, intensives sound, well, intense and maybe even a bit intimidating. But in my practice, I think about intensives as a personal retreat day where you have a therapist’s undivided attention for 3-4 hours at a time.

I know it’s so easy to convince yourself that you don’t need support unless life throws you a code red alert situation. If your distress tolerance is super high though, you run the risk of going without support until you reach your actual breaking point.

Getting support when you’re not in crisis, can help you move through an actual crisis with more ease and skill.

Who Benefits From Therapy Intensives

Therapy intensives are a great fit for so many people. In my practice, I specialize in working with adults who are high achievers and overthinkers who don’t want anxiety to take up so much space in their lives.

Clients who work with me tend to request intensives when they’re preparing for a major life event (like a wedding, a birth, or even a job change). And they do this because they want to be able to enjoy these life changes, rather than fear them.

I’ve also noticed that people who don’t like the traditional weekly therapy model, or simply don’t have time for weekly therapy, tend to get the most out of intensives.

Signs You Might Benefit from a Therapy Intensive

You’ve tried weekly talk therapy and didn’t feel supported.

This happens more often that you might realize! For some folks, talk therapy can turn into a surface level conversation about what your week was like. For others, a 50 minute talk therapy session simply isn’t enough time to get into the deeper work.

The intensives I offer blend Brainspotting and Internal Family Systems (aka parts work). Both methods are known for connecting you to the body-based experiences of anxiety that have been holding you back. You’ll be taught how to access the physical sensations attached to your emotions, so they have an opportunity to shift (instead of continuing to be bottled up).

You have an upcoming event you’d like to feel less anxious about.

Whether it’s a family trip, a job promotion, or a relocation, a therapy intensive can help to reduce your anxiety. During your intensive, you’ll get the opportunity to process and work through the anxiety so you can make space for other emotions, like excitement, gratitude, and curiosity.

You want a therapy experience that’s tailored to you and your needs.

I can only speak for my own practice, but no two therapy intensives are the same. That’s because I take into account your specific needs to deliver a therapy intensive that’ll be the best fit for you and your goals.
