The Benefits of Anxiety Therapy Intensives for Athletes

Let’s go ahead and address this upfront: weekly therapy isn’t always the best fit for athletes with packed schedules. Here’s what you need to know about anxiety therapy intensives before you convince yourself you need to wait until your off season to get support.

What’s a therapy intensive?

A therapy intensive is a whole lotta therapy in a tiny lil package. Instead of meeting every week for 50 minutes for months on end, you meet for a few hours all on the same day.

This gives you the opportunity to address one or two concerns in depth and on an accelerated timeline. So instead of waiting months for relief, you can make progress over the course of a few hours.

In my own practice, therapy intensives happen in three parts:

  • One 50 minute prep session

  • One 3-hour intensive session

  • One 50 minute follow up session

Since scheduling is more flexible with intensives, these sessions happen over the course of 2-3 weeks.

The Benefits of Intensives for Athletes

If you’re thinking, “Sounds great! But what exactly are the benefits?” I’ve got you covered.

Benefit #1: Intensives Use Methods Designed for Athletes

Brainspotting is my favorite method to introduce athletes to because it was developed with you in mind. Instead of simply talking about your concerns, Brainpostting gives you the opportunity to process emotions without even needing to speak.

This method of therapy works by identifying eye positions that pair up with memories and sensations related to your concerns. Brainspotting is something I could spend all day explaining, but it’s really best to experience it for yourself.

Benefit #2: A Variety of Concerns Can Be Addressed in a Few Hours

Athletes who make their way into my practice usually want to address common concerns like performance anxiety. But that’s not all therapy intensives are good for!

You can also use an intensive to process concerns related to:

  • Recovering from injuries

  • Fear of re-injury

  • Challenging team dynamics

  • Strained relationships with coaches

  • Unexpected team changes

  • Deciding to change careers or retire

Benefit #3: Scheduling is More Flexible

Between training and your travel schedule, weekly therapy isn’t the best fit. Since therapy intensives only require 2-3 meetings, we can work with your schedule so you can get the support you need. Some people even like to go through an intensive shortly before a game so they can see how therapy is paying off.
