My Approach to Couples Counseling

At its best, your relationship with your partner is supportive and fun, safe and nurturing. It’s one of the reasons why it’s so frustrating when things aren’t going well. Whether you’ve been together for a few months or a few years, I believe there is always something new to learn about your partner and your relationship.

When I work with couples, I take the time to learn about your history: how you met, what first drew you to each other, the good times you’ve had so far, and the story behind some of the challenges you’ve faced together. Not only can it be helpful to take a birds eye view of your relationship, but it allows me to learn about the ways that you two work well together. It also gives me some beginning clues about where you two could benefit from some new skills.

Couples counseling is meant to be a place where you can learn to be honest about how you feel within the relationship. It takes a bit of vulnerability to talk about any disappointments you might have about the current state of your relationship, but I can show you how to make this kind of vulnerability safe to share.

Couples counseling is also a space where you two can dream about the future of your relationship. It’s a place for identifying where you’d like your relationship to go and putting a plan in place for how to get there. I can help you create this roadmap for your relationship.

Couples Counseling FAQs

  • Nope! You don’t need to be married (nor even want to get married!) to attend couples counseling. I frequently work with couples who are newly dating, or newly cohabitating. All relationship stages are welcome in my practice.

  • I most often work with couples who need help with communication. A common dynamic I see is where one person in the relationship feels comfortable talking about their emotions, while the other partner is a bit more private.

I also work with couples who need help learning how to set expectations about household management.

  • Nope! Contrary to what you might have seen in movies, I don’t take sides in anyone’s relationship. My goal as your couples counselor is to support your relationship, not to assign blame to one partner.

  • There are a few situations where I do not recommend couples therapy:

When there is active verbal, physical, or sexual abuse within the relationship.

When either partner is actively having an affair that they are unwilling to end.

When either partner is experiencing addiction that is not being treated.
